The design and synthesis of well-defined supramolecular architectures requires a subtle balance between covalent synthesis and the assembly of the fragments prepared. For synthetic chemists, the non-covalent synthesis of supramolecular materials is one of the most challenging objectives in science: How far can we push chemical self-assembly and how can we get full control in structure and dynamics of 1D-, 2D- and 3D-materials, including supramolecular assemblies and polymers.
